I Am Worried My Child Has ADHD. Where Do I Start?
I get asked this question often, and it's a complex answer, so I thought I would write a blog post about ADHD testing to go into more detail.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) might seem like it's becoming more popular among children but I don't believe that is the case. I believe we have a greater understanding and awareness of neurodiversity which can be helpful for all kids.
It's important to remember that no one of us is the same, and that is where labels can be tricky. Instead, I like to look at strengths and areas for support alongside the diagnoses. If you have seen your child struggling and/or your whole family is struggling due to behaviours you are concerned about, I recommend you speak with a psychologist.
ADHD testing: where to start
Start by contacting your GP to discuss your concerns and symptoms. They can provide an initial assessment and refer your child to a specialist or a local service for further evaluation. It's worth noting that NHS treatment may involve a waiting list that can be several months long.
Alternatively, you can contact a private clinic or mental health service offering ADHD assessments. If you're looking to go down this route, I always advise my friends and clients to identify at least three psychologists they want to work with and then narrow it down to who they feel is the right fit for them.
When we are concerned with neurodiversity, a comprehensive evaluation can be helpful and will look at all the different areas of functioning before giving or not giving a diagnosis. It is important to note that engaging in the evaluation process first leads to a better experience and increases the likelihood of positive changes in individual therapy or psychiatric care. This is because understanding a child's functioning and strengths allows us to inform and tailor the treatment accordingly.

If you're in London and interested in discussing the services discussed in this blog, feel free to get in touch and submit an enquiry for testing through my website. If you're located elsewhere, simply search for psychological testing near you.
When you call a test centre to enquire about ADHD assessments, make sure you explain that you require a comprehensive evaluation to look at all areas of functioning, as this can rule the ADHD diagnosis in or out.
To ensure a thorough evaluation, avoid those who rely solely on self-report forms for diagnosis. Look for assessments that encompass more than just these forms. A comprehensive evaluation involves various methods to gain a proper understanding of your child's needs.
